Skydio stepped outside its comfort zone at its annual Ascend conference in Summerlin, Nevada. On September 24, the San Mateo company announced the F10 Lightrunner — its first fixed-wing aircraft — alongside MegaDock and two new industry-specific software platforms.
The Lightrunner flies up to 100 mph and operates across a 30-mile radius from the MegaDock, a robotic docking station that houses five aircraft. It's a clear push into longer-range, persistent missions: think perimeter security, infrastructure inspection, and wide-area mapping where a hovering quadcopter simply can't cover the ground.
Skydio built its reputation on autonomous quadcopters with best-in-class obstacle avoidance. A fixed-wing platform trades hovering for speed and range — a very different mission profile, and a signal that the company sees demand for autonomous aircraft that can stay out longer and cover more territory.
Paired with the MegaDock's five-aircraft capacity and the new software platforms, Skydio is positioning the system as a full autonomous operations package rather than just another airframe.
